We can’t get enough of Baby Reindeer. What a series! Poignant, witty, and dark with a humorous side. Creator and protagonist Richard Gadd has managed to turn a dark period in his life into artistic gold, resulting in a huge Netflix hit.
For those who haven’t followed along yet, a quick summary (sorry for the spoilers): a comedian named Donny (Gadd) has to deal with a stalker, Martha (Jessica Gunning). From a first meeting in the bar where Donny works to thousands of threatening messages.: we see how the ‘relationship’ between the two develops. In addition, the narrator (Donny) gives us a glimpse into his not-so-pleasant past through flashbacks. Because he has been sexually abused, he has difficulty opening up to a relationship.
9 Netflix Series Like Baby Reindeer to Watch
Gadd’s honesty and the uncanny chemistry between Donny and Martha make Baby Reindeer one of the most unique shows of the moment, but because the series only has seven 30-minute episodes, you may find yourself longing for more.
1. You
Another series that won’t let you go is You. It tells the story not from the perspective of the person being stalked, but from the perspective of the stalker. That stalker, named Joe Goldberg, is played by none other than Penn Badgley (known for Gossip Girl, Among others). Penn plays the role of a charismatic bookstore employee with flying colors. You would almost have a soft spot for the protagonist if it weren’t for the fact that he is pathologically obsessive. It is not without reason that You is the best-known and – in our humble opinion – best series about stalking. The series gives you insight into the minds and thoughts of stalkers. And there are already four seasons (plus!). The final season will be released soon, expect an explosive ending.
2. Swarm
Another series with an obsessive main character is Swarm, a psychological drama. In it, we follow Dre (Dominique Fishback), a young fan who becomes so obsessed with singer Ni’Jah (Nirine S. Brown) that she becomes increasingly violent. Fischback was rightly praised for her performance in the series. She delivers an amazing performance, while her character sinks deeper and deeper into a scary fantasy… There are conscious references to Beyoncé and her passionate fans. For example, Ni’jah’s fan base is called The Swarm and the singer herself is a copy of Queen B.
3. Fleabag
Phoebe Waller-Bridge ‘s critically acclaimed dramedy (a mix of drama and comedy) only produced two seasons, yet left a lasting mark on the TV industry. Many series tried to copy the quirky humor. Fleabag is not a comedy par excellence, because it also shows the dark side of life. Like Baby Reindeer, Fleabag also focuses on a main character who talks directly to the viewer. The series is not about stalking or obsessive relationships, but the protagonist is mentally tormented by the death of her best friend.
4. Beef
Beef is another high-quality dark comedy gem that is unlike most shows Netflix is putting out these days. An innocent traffic incident turns the lives of Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) upside down. Just like with Baby Reindeer, a strange relationship develops between the two main characters… The series was a success at the 2023 Emmys and received the award for best miniseries. Wong and Yeun also did not go home empty-handed and rightly so. The dynamic between the two is fantastic. We want more from this duo!
5. Ripley
Once The Talented Mr. Seen Ripley? Yes, that iconic 1999 film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow is based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. Good news for the fans – that is, us. There is now a new adaptation; the Ripley series, a beautiful black-and-white psychological thriller about sociopath Thomas Ripley (Andrew Scott) who becomes obsessed with a man and tries to take over his life… Less volatile, but more extreme than Baby Reindeer.
6. Chloe
Less well-known, but equally gripping, is the 2022 British thriller series Chloe (created by the director of Sex Education). A woman named Becky (Erin Doherty) becomes obsessed with the suicide of her childhood friend Chloe and adopts a false identity to infiltrate Chloe’s circle of friends and live the life she always wanted. Can she still wake up from her fantasy or will she lose herself?
7. Based on a true story
If you prefer something a little lighter, then you should watch Based on a True Story. Fortunately, contrary to what the title suggests, the series is not based on a true story. A married couple (played by Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina) discover the identity of a serial killer in their neighborhood. They decide to keep it to themselves and use it to boost their true-crime podcast. Hilarity everywhere, but sometimes also horribly exciting like Baby Reindeer.
8. Dirty John
Dirty John is a true crime drama series based on the podcast of the same name by Christopher Goffard. It tells the story of John Meehan (Eric Bana) who weaves a web of deceit to cheat a woman ( Connie Britton ) out of her fortune. This reflects the way Martha tells Donny lies about her past and her job and learns vital information about Donny.
9. I May Destroy You
Last but not least: I May Destroy You, an acclaimed comedy-drama created by Michaela Coel and based on her experiences. The series is not about stalking or obsessive behavior, but about a major event that drastically changes your life. Just like Donny, Arabella (Michaela Coel) has been sexually abused, she tries to put it behind her but learns that she can’t move on until she has completely dealt with it.
